PELLA, IOWA (April 6, 2018) Pella Corporation, a premium window and door manufacturer and designer, today announced that its manufacturing plants in Pella, Iowa and Wylie, Texas achieved the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) ENERGY STAR Challenge for Industry by reducing energy intensity by more than 10 percent in 2017. This is the second year in a row that Pella’s Wylie plant has received this honor, for a two-year total energy intensity improvement of more than 32 percent. This is the seventh time Pella and its plants have been recognized for sustainability efforts by the EPA’s ENERGY STAR Challenge for Industry program, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions caused by energy use.

The ENERGY STAR Challenge for Industry is a national call-to-action to improve energy efficiency of America’s manufacturers by 10 percent or more. By taking the ENERGY STAR Challenge, manufacturing sites set a goal to reduce their energy intensity by 10 percent within five years.

During 2017, both plants exceeded the ENERGY STAR Challenge criteria by more than six percent, each reducing energy intensity by more than 15 percent. Pella’s Wylie, Texas plant achieved a 16.5 percent energy intensity improvement and the Pella, Iowa plant site achieved a 17.5 percent energy intensity improvement. By achieving the ENERGY STAR Challenge for Industry, the two Pella plants have collectively reduced their annual source energy by over 138,000 MMBtu’s, which is enough energy to provide heat and power to over 1,000 homes for an entire year.

“Our team members’ hard work in identifying and implementing energy reduction projects and finding ways to ‘use only what is needed when it is needed’ makes us even more proud of our people, and makes this type of achievement possible.” said John Brouwer, Senior Engineer Technical Leader of Environmental, Safety and Sustainability for Pella Corporation. “Achieving the ENERGY STAR Challenge for Industry demonstrates Pella’s commitment to strong energy management practices that produce results for the environment, our customers, and team members.”

The Pella and Wylie sites achieved the ENERGY STAR Challenge through lighting improvements, increased building and system controls, identifying and reducing compressed air leaks, increasing awareness and conducting energy Kaizen events.

Over the past six years, six of Pella’s manufacturing sites have achieved the ENERGY STAR Challenge for Industry award, including Carroll, Ia., Shenandoah, Ia., Sioux Center, Ia., Portland, Ore., Wylie, Tex. and Pella, Ia. Five of Pella’s plant sites have already signed up again to work toward achieving ENERGY STAR’s Challenge for Industry in the coming year.
