PELLA, IOWA – (November 16, 2020) – Pella Corporation will present the Sioux Center Firefighters Association with a $25,000 grant to support their mission to provide leadership, representation and protection to the community. This contribution is made thanks to Pella team member Steve Boer, a 30-year volunteer firefighter, and his selfless commitment to making a difference in his community.

Each year, The Joan Kuyper Farver Spirit Award winner receives a grant for a non-profit organization of their choice, given in the recipient’s name. Steve chose the Sioux Center Firefighters Association because of his passion and ongoing dedication to the safety of his community.

Finalists’ Organizations Receive $10,000 Each

This year, during the pandemic and on Pella Corporation’s 95th anniversary, the Pella Rolscreen Foundation increased the amount of the awards given. In addition to the winning recipient’s $25,000 grant, four finalists were selected, each receiving a $10,000 grant to give to the charitable organization of their choice. Additional recipients include Dordt University, Shenandoah Volunteer Fire Department, Iowa State University Foundation’s Women in Science and Engineering and Courage League Sports

This has been a challenging year for everyone. Now more than ever, volunteer commitments and corporate contributions to non-profits matter. We felt it was important to increase the impact of these awards and support our team members and the non-profits they passionately serve.,” said Karmen Gardner, Pella Rolscreen Foundation Executive Director. “When our team members use their power to lift up those in need, they help make our company and our communities better.”

The Spirit Award Program began in 2018 as a way to honor the memory of Joan Kuyper Farver, who was known for giving generously of her resources and unselfishly of her time. Nominated by fellow Pella team members, the awards are given to team members who embrace Joan’s caring spirit and enthusiasm for community service.

Demonstrating Servant Leadership

Like Joan, Steve exemplifies the spirit of volunteerism. For more than 30 years, Steve has willingly put himself in harm’s way by responding to as many as 120 calls a year as a volunteer firefighter with Sioux Center. He also serves on the board of directors for the local firefighters.

“Steve has distinguished himself as a dedicated team member who not only embraces the mission of our organization but goes above and beyond to serve his community,” said Denny Van Zanten Sioux Center Plant Manager, Pella Corporation.
