Pella advances climate control project at Sioux Center facility

Pella Corporation reached a major milestone in a climate control improvement project at its Sioux Center manufacturing facility on Saturday, when a helicopter crew installed 36 rooftop units that will help create a more consistent and comfortable environment for team members. 

“Ultimately, the safety and well-being of our team members is our top priority. The climate control initiative represents a meaningful investment in our team members and the environment they work in every day," said Matt Mellema, Sioux Center Plant Manager.

Midwest Helicopter Airways, based in suburban Chicago, led the lift operation. The company brings more than 50 years of heavy-lifting experience, including similar work in Carroll. The aircraft used was a 1962 Sikorsky S-58JT helicopter, originally built for the West German army and later converted for civilian use.

Despite earlier concerns about rain and wind, weather conditions improved the day of the lift, allowing the operation to proceed under light winds and overcast skies.

Key Details:

• Midwest Helicopter Airways conducted safety training and a site inspection beginning at 8 a.m.
• The helicopter arrived on site around 10 a.m. and began lifting shortly after
• Crews averaged approximately two minutes per rooftop unit
• All 36 units were successfully placed in under 75 minutes
• Local contractor C.W. Suter prepared the site and supported the installation
• The City of Sioux Center assisted with barricades and temporary closure of 4th Avenue
   

The coordinated effort drew interest from employees, families, and community members, many of whom gathered to watch the operation.

“The Pella team is very excited for the climate control project. Once complete, these upgrades will help create a more consistent and comfortable atmosphere throughout the facility, especially during the hottest months of the year,” said Luke Francois, Sioux Center Engineering Team Leader.
 

What’s Next:

Installation work will continue ,the full system is expected to be fully operational in early July, improving interior temperature consistency and overall comfort across the facility ahead of peak summer conditions.
