A Kitchen Transformationopens in new window
I hope you all have a copy of my latest issue of “Living” - our September 2021 magazine is on newsstands right now and it features a beautiful story on the latest transformation project at my farm - a kitchen renovation. During the past year and a half we've all spent more time at home than ever before, and for many of us that meant changing the way we work. For me, many days are filled with phone calls, video conferences, and various virtual appearances and broadcasts. Earlier this year, I decided to transform the first floor of a guest house, so it could function more as a production work space and studio. I repainted the walls and cabinets, replaced several appliances with Viking, extended the center island, added deep shelves for displaying antique ceramics, installed new French doors from Pella, hung shades from Bruce + Hansen, LLC, and decorated the room with my personal collection of copper. The entire kitchen was transformed and modernized and it looks great. Enjoy these photos and be sure to read more about this renovation in "Living."

Replacing doors and adding elegant and functional shades can really transform a room. In my last blog, I talked about the latest project at my Bedford, New York farm - the renovation of a kitchen in my guest house, so it could be used for video and print shoots. Among the changes, I replaced the French doors to the terrace with new ones from Pella and adding beautiful sheer rolling shades by Erik Bruce Inc. These updates really completed the space, and I am so pleased with how everything came out. Enjoy these photos.

Power Breakfast: 9 ideas to keep in mind during COVID recoveryopens in new window
Iowa Housing Needs Tim Yaggi, president and CEO, Pella Corp. Iowa’s population increases have consistently trailed the national average. Without accelerated population growth, our long-term prosperity will be constrained by the lack of people to fill jobs. For businesses (and arguably for states and cities), growth is a critical indicator of health, and even their odds of survival. Growth is imperative, and if growth cannot be supported in Iowa because of the lack of an available and qualified workforce, investment priorities will shift increasingly toward other states with deeper labor pools.

Streetscapes: The Indestructible Townhouseopens in new window
Over 211 years, the Dickey House in Lower Manhattan has survived everything New York City has thrown at it. Soon it will become part of a new home for Public School 150. When it comes to architectural survivors amid Manhattan’s eternal churn of destruction and redevelopment, it is hard to top the 211-year-old, four-story brick landmark at 67 Greenwich Street in the financial district. Originally the townhouse of the merchant Robert Dickey, the decorous Federal-style dwelling was built in 1810 near the island’s southern tip, when nearby wharves bustled with trade and lower Greenwich Street was among the city’s poshest addresses.

Raising Awareness for Window Safetyopens in new window
As they do each year, the door and window industry has put a spotlight on window falls during Window Safety Week, which takes place annually during the first full week of April. According to SafeKids Worldwide, an average of eight children age five and under die and more than 3,300 are injured each year from falling out of windows. Some companies are doing what they can to raise awareness, so this number doesn’t increase further. And Pella Corporation issued a press release, and pushed out this message of safety through other channels as well. “Ensuring our windows are both beautiful and safe is a top priority for all of us at Pella,” says Josh Alden, Macomb’s interim manufacturing facility manager. “We have a team of dedicated product engineers who design with safety in mind–every time. We also have quality engineers at each of our manufacturing locations who are responsible for checking each product line thoroughly and ensuring all necessary safety measures are in place and that the windows meet all code requirements.”

Thermal pane windows have become the standard for new construction and retrofits. In most situations, the windows excel at their job, offering improved insulation, reduced noise transfer, uniform interior temperatures, and a crisp, clear view of the world beyond. On rare occasions, however, one or more glass panes in a thermal window will spontaneously shatter, creating a startling noise described as being similar to a gunshot and sending residents searching for an explanation. The catalyst isn’t always apparent, but rest assured, there’s a reason. Ahead, learn more about this peculiar occurrence, and discover ways to minimize the risk of window breakage.

Hamptons.com – The East End Community Comes Together To Produce Isolation Gowns For Stony Brook Southampton Hospital opens in new window
As the demand for personal protective equipment (PPE) skyrocketed in response to the Coronavirus (COVID-19), Stony Brook Southampton Hospital set out to shore up their supplies, in particular isolation gowns. Darrin Wiggins, MD, Vice Chair of Stony Brook Southampton Hospital Emergency Department, and Ken Wright, Chairman of the Southampton Hospital Association, generated multiple protective gown prototypes - one of which was very close to the isolation gowns currently utilized by the Hospital's healthcare workers. That jumpstarted an innovative, collaborative campaign that resulted in 10,000 new isolation gowns, made in approximately two and half weeks. The project was championed by a group of more than 100 committed volunteers, as well as longtime business associates that included Michael Reilly of Reilly Architectural, a division of Pella Corporation; Tracy Kappenberg, of Riverhead Building Supply; and Leonard Skuggevik, Tuckahoe School Superintendent.
