Pella Corp remembers former President & CEO J. Wayne Bevis

PELLA, IOWA — June 4, 2013 — Former Pella Corporation President and CEO J. Wayne Bevis passed away May 31 at the age of 79. In retirement, Bevis divided his time between his home on St. George Island, Fla., and near Rock Creek Lake near Kellogg, Iowa.

Bevis joined the company in 1972, and served as President and CEO of Pella Corporation for 15 years from 1980 until his retirement in 1995.

“Wayne and his team built the foundation for the transformation for what was then known as the Rolscreen Company into the innovative industry leader Pella Corporation has grown into today,” said Patrick J. Meyer, Pella’s current President and CEO.

Meyer said major accomplishments achieved during Bevis’ tenure included the introduction of traditional double-hung windows, the Architect Series®, Designer Series® and ProLine offerings, between-the-glass blind options, and Precision Fit® replacement windows. In that time, the company also constructed the Carroll, Iowa, and Shenandoah, Iowa, manufacturing operations. He also helped lead the addition of eight new production areas at the Pella, Iowa, operations, and introduced the first Pella® Window Store, Quality Circles and the use of kaizen in Pella’s focus on continuous improvement.

Bevis is survived by his wife Faye, two sons, Harold and Graydon, and a daughter Tina Bevis Wood, and their families.

Prepare homes, businesses for active 2013 hurricane season

PELLA, IOWA — May 28, 2013 — Weather experts predict another active Atlantic hurricane season in 2013. The 2012 Atlantic hurricane season — one of the most active and costly in U.S. history — caused more than $75 billion in damages, according to the National Hurricane Center. Super Storm Sandy left nearly 150 people dead, thousands homeless and caused about $20 billion in property damages.

Pella Windows teams with Knoxville Raceway for 2nd JDRF benefit

PELLA, IOWA — May 22, 2013 — Pella® Windows and Doors is teaming up with Knoxville Raceway to raise money to help the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) in its race for a cure for type 1 diabetes.

On Sat., June 1, race fans will enjoy the Lucas Oil Knoxville Championship Cup Series #7 race. For each $15 adult general admission purchased that night with a Pella Corp/JDRF coupon, the raceway will donate $5 to the Greater Iowa JDRF Chapter to help fund type 1 diabetes research.

Gates open at 6 p.m. at Knoxville Raceway, just off Highway 14 at 1000 N. Lincoln St., in Knoxville, Iowa. Hot Laps begin at 6:45 p.m. with time trials set to push off around 7:15 p.m.

PELLA, IOWA — April 30, 2013 — The Iowa-Illinois Safety Council awarded the Pella® Windows and Doors manufacturing team in Pella, Iowa, with the Gold Incident Rate Excellence award during its 60^th Annual Professional Development Conference and Expo in Coralville, Iowa, April 10-11.

The Gold Award is the highest honor an organization can earn from the council for outstanding achievement in accident prevention.

“Team members at our Pella, Iowa, site know that safety is our No. 1 workplace priority,” said Don Argo, Pella’s environmental and safety engineer. “We believe there is nothing more important than our team members returning home safely from work to their families and friends.”

The Pella, Iowa, operations team earned the award for promoting active safety programs and preventing Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recordable injuries. To qualify for the award, applicants had to demonstrate an incident rate lower than the national average for their specific industry.

Pella Corporation hosts free electronics recycling for community

PELLA, IOWA —April 10, 2013 — Nearly 373,000 pounds of obsolete electronics have been recycled and kept out of local landfills since Pella Corporation started its popular Earth Day electronic recycling (eCycling) event in 2005. That’s equivalent to 31 adult male elephants or about seven full garbage trucks.

Pella and its eCycling partners are expanding the successful event in 2013 to include local businesses, in addition to residents.

“This marks the first time a separate event is being held for Marion County businesses to eCycle electronics, in addition to the popular event residents have strongly supported for years,” said Don Argo, Pella Corporation sustainability champion.

“We encourage area residents and businesses to start sorting now and prepare to bring their old electronics to these community eCycling events that help improve everyone’s environmental stewardship within the Pella community.”

Pella Corporation’s Information Technology and Environmental/Sustainability teams together with the City of Pella Public Works, Vermeer Corporation, Precision Pulley and Idler, Rosenmann’s Inc., Gleason & Associates, Inc., Central College and Midwest Electronic Recovery, are coordinating this year’s events.

Community eCycling opportunities:

Pella, Iowa (residents) — April 20 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Pella Corporation, parking lot near the intersection of Clark and South Streets

Acceptable items

Acceptable electronic items to recycle include computer monitors, personal computers, televisions, printers, video gaming systems, VCRs, stereos, cell phones, keyboards and laptops. Items like fans, space heaters, microwaves, toaster ovens and dehumidifiers are not accepted.

Businesses will be charged a $5 fee per computer monitor, but all other electronic items will be accepted free of charge. Residents will not be charged the monitor fee. However, donations will be accepted to help benefit area non-profit and educational causes to support environmental education.

Properly recycling old computers and other electronics keeps them out of landfills, and may also help prevent the risk of identity theft taken from old computer files.

Hundreds participate each year

In 2012, more than 530 homes participated in eCycling events — dropping off nearly 2,330 items to be recycled. Televisions were the most popular items, followed by personal computers and computer monitors. Since the first eCycling event in 2005 in Pella, Iowa, the company has helped divert more than 372,763 pounds (or 186.4 tons) of electronics from local landfills.

Data security is key

The Pella IT and Environmental/Sustainability teams research recycling vendors each year to find the best fit for the event. Top priorities are selecting a vendor with data security practices built into their process, and the ability to handle electronic recycling in a safe, environmentally-friendly way.

Pella team members also volunteer on eCycling day to ensure events run smoothly.

Funding for eCycling events is provided by partner organizations. Although there is no charge for eCycling services for residents, donations are accepted to support local charities and schools to help promote environmental stewardship.

In 2012, over $2,000 was raised from donations at the Pella, Iowa, event to help fund environmental programs at Pella Christian and Pella high schools and Central College.

Why eCycle?

Discarded electronics can contain hazardous materials. If disposed improperly, they pose a potential threat to human health and the environment.
E-waste accounts for 40 percent of the lead and 75 percent of the heavy metals found in landfills, according to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (IDNR’s) website.
Proper disposal of electronic waste can help protect your privacy and lessen the risk of identity theft. Before donating or recycling your electronics, remove personal information from your system or use a reputable organization that provides that service.
Recycling one million laptops saves the energy equivalent to the electricity used by 3,657 U.S. homes in a year, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) website.

Windows play vital role in home safety

PELLA, IOWA — April 1, 2013 — In many parts of the U.S., April marks the start of warmer weather for cooped-up families longing for sunshine. As your windows open to bring in fresh air, Pella Corporation encourages consumers to practice window safety to help prevent accidental falls.

April 7 – 13 is National Window Safety Week in America — a reminder to parents and caregivers about how to help prevent accidental falls or injuries and how to use windows for potential emergency escapes. Pella teams up with the National Safety Council (NSC) through its Window Safety Task Force, to promote year-round window safety tips.

“Keep an eye on children in the home and teach them to keep their play in the center of the room, away from windows and doors for safety’s sake,” said Kathy Krafka Harkema, Pella spokesperson and a NSC Window Safety Task Force member. “Keep windows closed and locked when not in use for ventilation. When you do open double-hung windows to let in fresh air, a safer solution is to pull the top sash down and keep the lower sash closed when there are children in the home,” she said.

About 14 children a day

About 5,200 children in the U.S. are taken to hospitals each year for treatment from a window fall, according to a study by the Center for Injury Research and Policy of the Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. That’s an average of about 14 children per day. Children younger than 5 made up 65 percent of those injured.

“Responsible adult supervision is essential when it comes to maintaining child safety,” Krafka Harkema said. “Never lean on screens, because insect screens are not designed to keep anyone from falling. They simply help keep bugs out; insect screens don’t protect you or your loved ones from accidental falls.”

Window safety tips from Pella:

Keep furniture like beds or dressers away from windows. Furniture placed directly under a window can create an enticement for a child to climb and the potential to fall.
Keep children’s play safely away from windows, doors and balconies to help prevent an accidental fall or injury.
Remember, insect screens are designed to provide ventilation and to keep insects out, NOT to prevent falls. For added safety in children’s bedrooms, consider installing window guards or window fall prevention devices that meet American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards.
Window treatments with traditional cords can contribute to childhood injuries. For added protection, choose blinds and shades with no room-side cords like Pella Designer Series^® windows and patio doors, which feature between-the-glass blinds, shades and decorative panels. Pella^® 350 Series patio doors also offer between-the-glass window fashions with no roomside cords.
Plant soft shrubs, like boxwood, or yews, under exterior windows that might be used as an emergency escape route to help soften a fall.

Do not allow children to jump on beds or other furniture, especially near windows.
Talk to older children about the dangers of playing near windows.

PELLA, IOWA —March 5, 2013 — Pella Corporation earned an ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year 2013 award, presented by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Energy (DOE) for manufacturing energy-efficient windows and educating consumers about them.

Pella® Windows & Doors team walks to raise money for diabetes research

PELLA, IOWA — Feb 4., 2013 — Put on your walking shoes and help raise money for diabetes research on Sat., Feb. 16, by participating in the annual Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) walk. This year’s event starts at the Marriott in downtown Des Moines, and weaves through the skywalk system. Registration begins at 8 a.m., with opening ceremonies at 8:30 a.m.

The Greater Iowa Walk to Cure Diabetes 2013 is often Iowa’s largest single-day fundraiser for a non-profit cause, and among the largest walks per-capita for JDRF across the US, according to JDRF. Pella Corporation President and CEO and Greater Iowa Corporate Walk Chair Pat Meyer is honored to support the event.

“Our Pella Windows and Doors team is proud to have raised more than $2 million for JDRF in 10 years. It’s a highly-efficient non-profit organization that puts the bulk of dollars raised directly to research to help find a cure for type 1 diabetes,” Meyer said.

JDRF’s research mission is to “discover, develop and deliver advances that cure, better, treat and prevent type 1 diabetes.” Type 1 diabetes affects 3 million people every year in the United States, and claims an estimated 80 lives each day.

While there are two major types of diabetes, JDRF primarily supports research for type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune disease in which a pancreas doesn’t produce enough insulin — a hormone that helps break down food into energy. Scientists believe that genetic and environmental factors may be involved in disease onset.

“The great thing about donating to JDRF is that you are impacting so many people’s lives for the better, especially when you take part in events like the JDRF walk,” Meyer said. “Personally, I have several friends and team members who live with this disease every day. That’s why the Pella team is dedicated to helping raise money for research, to help find a cure for diabetes.”

Jim Thomas is one Pella team member whose family is affected by type 1 diabetes.“I am personally committed to JDRF, since my daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes seven years ago,” said Thomas, director of IT operations at Pella.

Currently serving on the Greater Iowa JDRF board, Thomas will lead the board as President for a two-year term, starting in July of 2013. “I encourage people to get involved with JDRF, and appreciate all the support both within the Pella team member family and communities around us,” Thomas said.

Thomas, Meyer and other Pella team members along with an estimated 6,000 others will walk to raise money for JDRF research.

“We encourage Iowans to join us Feb. 16 in a new location at the downtown Des Moines Marriott for this lively event that gives the whole family a chance to get out, get some exercise and take in family-friendly fun while supporting JDRF,” Meyer said.

Holiday "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" to feature Pella® products

PELLA, Iowa — Dec. 6, 2012 — On Monday, Dec. 10, a special Christmas episode of ABC television network’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” (EMHE) includes energy-efficient products Pella Windows and Doors donated for the project. The two-hour holiday episode will air at 8 p.m. Eastern/7 p.m. Central on ABC-TV.

The makeover of a home in Lincolnton, N.C. (near Charlotte) marks the 29^th appearance of Pella products on EMHE, which builds new homes for deserving families. The Charlotte home features 32 Pella wood windows with low-maintenance EnduraClad^® protective exterior finish and seven Pella fiberglass entry doors and patio doors.

Pella Windows and Doors representatives from Charlotte, N.C., assisted with the project and helped install the windows and doors.

Threat of home fires persists as widespread U.S. drought continues

PELLA, IOWA — October 5, 2012 — According to the National Climatic Data Center, the drought of 2012 that persists across much of the United States is among the 10 largest of the past century. With hot, dry conditions continuing across much of the country, Pella Windows and Doors encourages Americans to be especially vigilant about home fire safety.

“High heat, combined with little precipitation across much of the U.S., creates favorable conditions for fires,” said Kathy Krafka Harkema, Pella spokesperson and fire safety educator. “Now’s the time to develop a home fire safety escape plan, and practice it with your family to promote fire and window safety preparedness,” she said.

Through its Close the door on fire^® campaign, Pella encourages consumers to practice home safety year-round:

Identify! Prepare! Practice!

Evaluate fire safety risks inside your home and immediate surroundings. Equip your garage with smoke detectors since garage fires can start and spread quickly. Also, properly extinguish fire in indoor fireplaces or outdoor fire settings like grills or fire pits to prevent the risk of fire spreading around your home or elsewhere. Check for local burn ban ordinances and follow them.
Identify two exits – Designate two exits from every room in your home — a door and a window. Make sure doors and windows open quickly and easily to help ensure a quick exit; if not, consider replacing them for safety’s sake.
Have a plan – Download a fire escape grid from Pella (http://pressroom.pella.com/photo_library/preview/621/) and draw a floor plan of each level of your home. Before an emergency strikes, establish and communicate a meeting place a safe distance outside your home for your household members to gather in the event of a fire.
Check the alarms – Install working smoke alarms in or near every sleeping area and on every level in your home. Test alarms monthly, change batteries regularly, and replace alarms not permanently wired into your home’s electrical system every 10 years.
Make smart purchases – Consider keeping items like fire extinguishers and if your home contains more than one story, fire escape ladders in your home. Mark their location on your home fire plan and share this information with those in your home.
Test the alarm – Sound smoke alarms when household members are awake so everyone knows what they sound like, and test your family’s ability to awaken to fire alarms during sleeping hours. If they don’t awaken easily, assign someone to awaken sound sleepers in the event of an emergency.
Practice makes perfect – Practice your home fire escape plan with everyone in your home at least twice a year. Practice your plan first in the daytime to familiarize everyone in your home with what to do in the event of a fire, and then at night, when most home fires occur.

Fire safety during drought

Keep grass cut short around your home and property
Remove dried leaves and other unnecessary flammable debris
Remove debris from your home’s gutters
Trim and remove dead plant material like trees and shrubs in your landscaping
Observe burn bans and refrain from starting outdoor fires, including campfires and grills that have exposed embers

Window safety tips from Pella

Keep children’s play away from windows, doors and balconies.
Teach people not to lean against a window screen. Insect screens are designed to keep bugs out, not to keep a person in the building.
Keep windows closed and locked when not in use to let in fresh air. When opening windows for ventilation, open those that a child cannot reach like the upper sash on a double-hung window.
Keep furniture like beds and dressers — anything children can climb — away from windows.

Safety stats

In the U.S., a home fire is reported every 83 seconds, according to the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA). More than 3,500 Americans die each year in fires, USFA reports, and about 20,000 are injured.

Pella team members rally to help find a cure for type 1 diabetes

PELLA, IOWA — July 24, 2012 — You need the skills of a mathematician, a physician, a personal trainer and a dietician to successfully treat and live with type 1 diabetes, says Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) celebrity spokesperson Mary Tyler Moore.

“We need to be constantly factoring and adjusting, making frequent finger sticks to check blood sugars, and giving ourselves multiple daily insulin injections just to stay alive,” said Moore on the JDRF website.

Moore is one of three million Americans who has or may have type 1 diabetes, according to JDRF. Each year, more than 150,000 children and 15,000 adults — about 80 people per day — are diagnosed with the disease, according to JDRF.

Pella employees pledge support

Nearly a decade ago, the team members of Pella^®Windows and Doors began actively raising money for JDRF to help find a cure for the autoimmune disease.

During the past year, Pella team members across the U.S. and Canada have raised $107,777. Add that to its annual fundraising since 2003, and Pella team members have raised $2,083,411 for the non-profit JDRF to help support type 1 diabetes research.

“Those who live with type 1 diabetes typically take insulin every day just to survive. We know that insulin is not a cure, and that’s why Pella is dedicated to raising money for JDRF to help fund essential research,” said Pella spokeswoman Kathy Krafka Harkema, who donated a kidney to free her mother from dialysis, when her mother’s kidneys failed from type 1 diabetes. “Pella team members proudly raise money for JDRF to make life easier for those with type 1 diabetes and those who care for them,” said Krafka Harkema.

Personal connections

Krafka Harkema is one of many Pella employees with a personal connection to type 1 diabetes. Jim Thomas, director of information technology operations at Pella, has a daughter with type 1 diabetes. Thomas is now president-elect of the Greater Iowa JDRF Chapter Board of Directors.

“Reality sets in very quickly once a loved one is diagnosed with diabetes,” he said. “Life changing is immediate!”

Thomas credits JDRF for its commitment to funding diabetes research. In the more than 40 years the organization has been raising money, type 1 diabetes has become much easier for people to deal with, monitor and control, he said.

“As a parent, you are clearly reminded every day of very real impacts and concerns from this disease. It’s a constant battle wanting to understand and not be overprotective,” he said. “My daughter is 19 years old and does a great job taking responsibility for her health. She understands what it means to her for the long term.”

Moving toward a cure

More than 80 percent of JDRF donations fund research and research-related education advances in every stage of type 1 diabetes, from prevention to treatment to cure, said Mary Hunter, executive director of JDRF Greater Iowa. At the Greater Iowa Chapter, which contributes more than $2.1 million annually to diabetes research, the efficiencies are even higher than 80 percent.

“JDRF funds more type 1 diabetes research than any other charity, but there is more promising science out there than we can currently afford to fund,” Hunter said.

“Through the support we have from corporations like Pella Windows and Doors we can deliver better treatments, and eventually a cure,” she said.

What is Type 1 diabetes?

Type 1 diabetes — also called juvenile diabetes — occurs when the body’s own immune system misguidedly attacks and destroys certain cells in the pancreas, according to JDRF.. These cells normally produce insulin, a chemical messenger that helps the body move sugar from food sources into cells throughout the body, which use it for fuel to stay alive. But when the cells are destroyed, no insulin can be produced, and sugar stays in the blood instead, where it can cause serious damage to the organ systems of the body and starves cells of their normal energy source.

Matthew Blom earns 2012 AAMA scholarship

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — June 13, 2012 — Matthew Blom, son of Pella Corporation team member George Blom, earned an American Architectural Manufacturers Association scholarship. Pella Corporation is a member of AAMA, a trade association representing both residential and commercial window, door and skylight manufacturers. Matthew will pursue a degree in mechanical engineering at Iowa State University in Ames, this fall.

Mathew has earned awards for his leadership on the football field, as well as for engineering research through the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. In addition to tutoring students in mathematics, Matthew participates on his church worship team and is a Fellowship of Christian Athletes student leader.

AAMA continues its commitment for the 12th consecutive year by awarding seven scholarships to children of employees of AAMA member companies. The award was announced at the 2012 AAMA National Summer Conference June 10-13 in Oak Brook, Ill. Pella Corp engineer leaves lasting legacy for Iowa parks

PELLA, IOWA — June 4, 2012 — Chris Desjardins worked tirelessly as an engineer for Pella Corporation for 23 years. Quiet-natured and passionate about energy efficiency, people described him as an avid outdoorsman, brilliant thinker and all-around-nice guy. His sudden death at age 47 on May 5, 2009, stunned family and coworkers. Today, his legacy lives on through a new renewable energy project funded by Desjardins’ estate, designed to help encourage Iowans to use renewable energy, specifically wind and solar power in their homes.

When Chris died, he left a generous gift from an insurance policy to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) for the creation of a renewable energy project. The Chris Desjardins Memorial Fund fueled the seed money for IDNR’s largest renewable energy project, together with additional funding from the Iowa Economic Development Authority, IJOBS, and the Resource Enhancement and Protection Fund.

Details about the project will be announced at a ceremony Friday, June 8, at Honey Creek State Park Resort near Moravia, Iowa. The public event will take place from 10 a.m. – noon on the resort’s back terrace and will include tours of the activity center, lodge, cottages and grounds.

“His college application essay urged the U.S. to invest more heavily in renewable energy, specifically wind and solar power,” says older brother Pete Desjardins, who lives in Chicago. Chris wrote the essay in 1981, when he was 19 years old. “It wasn’t surprising that he was thinking about renewable energy in his estate plan. I guess you could say that he ‘walked the walk,’” Pete says. “That’s the kind of guy he was.”

Renewables: Live! project

Honoring the family’s wishes, Pete championed the Desjardins Renewable Project taking a vague idea and turning it into a statewide pilot program. Its aim is to give Iowans first-hand experience with the power of renewable energy by creating seven working solar- and wind-powered building projects at several Iowa state parks. The details:

$1.1 million project – funding from IOEI, through federal stimulus, IDNR and the Chris Desjardins Memorial Fund
State parks included in pilot project – Honey Creek Resort in Appanoose County, Lake Darling in Washington County, Pleasant Creek in Linn County, EB Lyons Nature Center in Dubuque County, Big Creek in Polk County, Brushy Creek in Webster County, Lewis & Clark in Monona County and Nine Eagles in Decatur County
Renewable power projects include – solar-powered security lights, solar photovoltaic panels for building/cabin rooftops, small wind turbines and solar thermal roof applications
Goals – to introduce renewable technologies accessible to the average homeowner, while creating a green experience at state parks. Additionally, reduce ongoing power expenses and the parks’ overall carbon footprint.

“Although I never got a chance to meet him, Chris was an inspiration on how one person can make a difference. We want to help tell his story and inspire people to install wind and solar projects in their homes,” said Tammie Krausman, IDNR project manager and a driving force behind making the project a reality.

“We chose sites throughout the state so we can educate as many people as possible, while reducing our energy demand. It’s an exciting way to give people first-hand experience with the power of renewable energy,” she says. “Everyone who worked on this project was inspired by Chris Desjardins.”

Legendary work ethic

Chris worked for Pella in Iowa during his career. At the time of his death, Chris was living in Tennessee, working as an engineering manager for Pella Corporation’s Murray, Ky., manufacturing operations.

“Chris was a prize jewel that you wanted to have on your team,” says Jim Meyer, vice president of operations at Pella and longtime colleague. “Chris lived Pella^® Windows and Doors. He was his own guy. He did it his own way. He wasn’t afraid to have confidence in who he was.”

Chris worked for Pella Corporation for his entire career. Though Chris lived a “uniquely private” life, Meyer says he was a valued part of the “family” at Pella Corporation and was regarded as a high-energy, intelligent, humble leader with an unmatched work ethic.

Grease-powered VW

Pete says his brother showed a lifelong passion for alternative energy. For instance, Chris owned two wind turbines to help power his Tennessee home. He also drove “the greasemobile” — a 1989 Volkswagen^® Jetta^® he converted to run on recycled grease that he filtered in his garage. The greasemobile boasted an astounding 375 miles per gallon of diesel fuel (the remaining energy being provided by recycled popcorn oil). “He drove that car to work every day,” Pete remembers. “It stuck out like a sore thumb.”

Chris was very athletic — running 17 marathons during his life, including one week when he ran two. He also loved to hunt. He went on an African safari by himself, was dropped from a helicopter into remote Alaska to hunt bear with a bow and arrow, and had Iowa deer trophies hanging in his home.

“We got cheated when Chris died,” Meyer says of Desjardin’s unexpected passing. “We needed to have Chris around longer. He was so impactful for our company. You just don’t replace someone like him.”

Ongoing legacy

A portion of the Chris Desjardins Memorial Fund is being set aside as seed money to attract future renewable energy grants, Pete says. Others who wish to adopt this noble pursuit or contribute further can contact The Iowa Department of Natural Resources or Pete Desjardins at pete@yoexllc.com.

“We want to make sure that Chris is remembered,” Pete says. “We want his legacy to stand for renewable energy and educating people about how to make their own homes and lifestyles more sustainable and energy-efficient. I know that’s what he’d want.”

PELLA, Iowa — May 22, 2012 — Pella Windows and Doors is teaming up with Knoxville Raceway in a new way to raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).

“Join us for Pella Corporation and JDRF are racing to a cure for diabetes night June 2 at Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa, to experience fast-paced sprint car racing action and support JDRF,” said Carla Vander Molen, who chairs Pella’s Human Resources Employee Services activities team.

For each $15 adult general admission purchased that night with the Pella Corp/JDRF coupon, the raceway will donate $5 to the Greater Iowa JDRF Chapter to help fund type 1 diabetes research. Those adults using the Pella Corp/JDRF coupon June 2 will also earn free admission that night for their toddlers and school-aged children. The new aluminum curtain wall leverages Duracast^® fiberglass composite technology in a patent-pending thermal break design. Curtain walls

The EFCO 5600 curtain wall features an optional Duracast pressure plate that is 300 times better than aluminum for thermal conductance and provides a 27 percent gain in frame and glass U-factor. Green Schoolhouse Series creates sustainable schools

PELLA, Iowa — May 8, 2012 — Pella Windows and Doors will be included in new LEED^®(Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Platinum schoolhouses built in Arizona in 2012, as a partner in the Green Schoolhouse Series.

Three distinctive designs will replace portable classrooms or community centers in Phoenix area school districts. Construction of a 6,291 square-foot classroom and community-center building for Roadrunner Elementary School is now underway in west Phoenix. Two more Phoenix area schoolhouses are slated to break ground in 2012.

“The Green Schoolhouse project’s goal is to help create a better learning environment for children,” said Pella Corporation Vice President of Marketing Elaine Sagers. “As a longtime leader in sustainability and educational causes, it was a natural for us to donate Pella windows and EFCO storefront and entrance systems to help students in these communities.”

Reading, writing and air

More than 20 percent of public schools reported having unsatisfactory indoor air quality, according to the U.S. Department of Education. And it’s estimated that students in America miss approximately 14 million school days per year because of asthma, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

According to the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, controlling exposure to indoor environmental factors, like carbon monoxide, dust, and pollen, could help prevent more than 65 percent of asthma cases among elementary school-age children.

Factory-applied protective film will now be standard on interior and exterior glass surfaces of Pella wood window and patio door lines, including Pella ProLine, Architect Series®, Designer Series® and custom wood products.*
