Prepare homes, businesses for active 2013 hurricane season

PELLA, IOWA — May 28, 2013 — Weather experts predict another active Atlantic hurricane season in 2013. If you live in an area prone to hurricanes, Pella Windows and Doors encourages you to prepare your home, vacation home or business for the high winds, flying debris and heavy rains that can accompany hurricanes.

The 2012 Atlantic hurricane season — one of the most active and costly in U.S. history — caused more than $75 billion in damages, according to the National Hurricane Center. Super Storm Sandy left nearly 150 people dead, thousands homeless and caused about $20 billion in property damages.

“When a hurricane threatens, make personal safety a top priority,” said Kathy Krafka Harkema, Pella spokesperson. “The time to prepare your home or business for severe weather is before a hurricane or tropical storm hits. For example, consider installing Pella windows or patio doors with impact-resistant glass to help protect your home and belongings year-round, whether you are home or away.”

Pella’s HurricaneShield® impact-resistant glass is laminated with a polymer interlayer that helps stop flying debris from breaking completely through it, to help keep a building intact, even in fierce winds.

In fact, Pella windows and doors with HurricaneShield impact-resistant glass are so strong that they are designed to withstand the equivalent impact of a 2-by-4 traveling at 50 feet per second. To learn more about how Pella tests its products with impact-resistant glass, watch a hurricane testing video here. Plus, these durable products meet the stringent Dade County, Florida code.

Help protect belongings, reduce outside noise

Pella offers two window and door lines with HurricaneShield impact-resistant glass: Architect Series® wood windows and patio doors, and Pella 350 Series vinyl patio doors.

“Pella HurricaneShield windows and doors with impact-resistant glass help protect you and your home in the event of a hurricane. They also help reduce outside noise, for a more peaceful home environment, no matter where you live,” said Krafka Harkema.

Krafka Harkema encourages home and business owners to consult with their insurance agents to review coverage for buildings and their contents.

“If you live in an area prone to hurricanes, ask if your insurance coverage provides discounts if you replace your existing windows and doors with impact-resistant products,” she said. “Lower insurance premiums can help offset the cost of window or door replacement, and add to your peace of mind by preparing your home or business before a storm strikes,” Krafka Harkema said.

Wood product options

Pella Architect Series wood windows and doors with impact-resistant HurricaneShield glass offer sought-after features including seacoast-worthy, low maintenance EnduraClad® aluminum clad exteriors that help protect the window or door from the elements. Stainless-steel operating hardware — a standard feature on Pella casement windows — resists rust and corrosion even in demanding coastal environments.

Pella’s design eliminates the need for unsightly brace clips and other visible reinforcement, enabling you to enjoy beautiful, natural wood interiors in the Architect Series collection.

Durable, low-maintenance vinyl patio doors

With a distinctive design, durable frame and high-quality hardware, Pella 350 Series vinyl sliding patio doors feature energy-efficient options that meet or exceed U.S. ENERGY STAR® guidelines.

Pella 350 Series vinyl patio doors include premium options:

2-, 3- or 4-panel doors let in more natural light and expand your view

Multiple design possibilities with choice of sidelights and transoms, and factory-installed grilles-between-the-glass

Shades- or blinds-between-the-glass that stay clean, and provide light control and increased privacy. Plus the cordless design is safer for homes with children and pets.

Triple-pane Low-E glass and foam-insulated panels for increased energy efficiency

About Pella

Pella® premium vinyl sliding patio doors now with Rolscreen® technology

PELLA, IOWA — May 20, 2013 —With outdoor temperatures on the rise, homeowners are, firing up the grill and opening windows and patio doors to let in fresh air.

“Now is the time to install a new patio door so you can enjoy your backyard, patio or deck all summer long,” said Sandy Blom, Pella product manager. “Patio doors create an impressive focal point for your home and frame your landscaping and view. Plus, they’re designed to let in plenty of sunlight and fresh air into your home.”

Pella now offers its innovative Rolscreen retractable screen for Pella 350 Series premium vinyl sliding patio doors. The Rolscreen rolls sideways across the patio door to provide ventilation when needed and then rolls back out of sight when not in use, allowing more natural light to flow into a home, rather than looking through a screen year-round. When rolled away, Rolscreen retractable screens are protected from the elements, children and pets. Plus, there’s no need to take them down and store them in the winter.

“We pioneered the Rolscreen technology in 1925, and it remains popular today with homeowners who enjoy the convenience of a retractable screen from Pella,” Blom said.

Features of the Rolscreen retractable screen:

Available on 2-, 3- and 4-panel Pella 350 Series vinyl patio door configurations in all sizes

Screen is color-matched to the exterior color of the patio door

Durable extruded aluminum design holds up to heavy use

Easy-to-operate design: the handle and magnet are incorporated into the pull bar to make it easy to open and close

Floating magnet system provides “give and take” to help ensure a tight seal when the door is closed

Low-profile sill track, to help reduce potential tripping

Low-friction, powder-coat paint on tracks ensures smoother gliding

The optional Pella Rolscreen must be ordered at the time of purchase of a new Pella 350 Series patio door, since the Rolscreen is installed as part of the patio door’s installation.

Distinctive vinyl patio doors

Pella 350 Series sliding patio doors are ideal for balconies, decks or patios. They feature optional triple-pane glass, impact glazing, blinds between-the-glass and up to four door panels. Their exclusive SmoothSeam™ welded corners are virtually invisible, and they’re stronger and more durable than other vinyl products. Pella 350 Series products with triple-pane glass are 54% to 83% more energy efficient than single-pane products.1

Pella Corporation hosts free electronics recycling for community

PELLA, IOWA —April 10, 2013 — Nearly 373,000 pounds of obsolete electronics have been recycled and kept out of local landfills since Pella Corporation started its popular Earth Day electronic recycling (eCycling) event in 2005. That’s equivalent to 31 adult male elephants or about seven full garbage trucks.

Pella and its eCycling partners are expanding the successful event in 2013 to include local businesses, in addition to residents.

“This marks the first time a separate event is being held for Marion County businesses to eCycle electronics, in addition to the popular event residents have strongly supported for years,” said Don Argo, Pella Corporation sustainability champion.

“We encourage area residents and businesses to start sorting now and prepare to bring their old electronics to these community eCycling events that help improve everyone’s environmental stewardship within the Pella community.”

Pella Corporation’s Information Technology and Environmental/Sustainability teams together with the City of Pella Public Works, Vermeer Corporation, Precision Pulley and Idler, Rosenmann’s Inc., Gleason & Associates, Inc., Central College and Midwest Electronic Recovery, are coordinating this year’s events.

Community eCycling opportunities:

Pella, Iowa (residents) — April 20 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Pella Corporation, parking lot near the intersection of Clark and South Streets

Pella, Iowa (businesses) — April 23 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Central College Facilities building near the intersection of Peace and Broadway Streets

Macomb, Ill. — April 20 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Pella® Windows & Doors manufacturing plant, 3600 E. Jackson St.

Shenandoah, Iowa — April 20 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Eaton Corporation manufacturing plant, 1600 Airport Road

Sioux Center, Iowa — April 20 from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Pella Windows & Doors manufacturing plant, 1800 N. Main Ave.

Oskaloosa, Iowa — April 20 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Mahaska Communication Group (MCG) parking lot (south of Hy-Vee by the basketball courts), 112 First Ave. W

Acceptable items

Acceptable electronic items to recycle include computer monitors, personal computers, televisions, printers, video gaming systems, VCRs, stereos, cell phones, keyboards and laptops. Items like fans, space heaters, microwaves, toaster ovens and dehumidifiers are not accepted.

Businesses will be charged a $5 fee per computer monitor, but all other electronic items will be accepted free of charge. Residents will not be charged the monitor fee. However, donations will be accepted to help benefit area non-profit and educational causes to support environmental education.

Properly recycling old computers and other electronics keeps them out of landfills, and may also help prevent the risk of identity theft taken from old computer files.

Hundreds participate each year

In 2012, more than 530 homes participated in eCycling events — dropping off nearly 2,330 items to be recycled. Televisions were the most popular items, followed by personal computers and computer monitors. Since the first eCycling event in 2005 in Pella, Iowa, the company has helped divert more than 372,763 pounds (or 186.4 tons) of electronics from local landfills.

Data security is key

The Pella IT and Environmental/Sustainability teams research recycling vendors each year to find the best fit for the event. Top priorities are selecting a vendor with data security practices built into their process, and the ability to handle electronic recycling in a safe, environmentally-friendly way.

Pella team members also volunteer on eCycling day to ensure events run smoothly.

Funding for eCycling events is provided by partner organizations. Although there is no charge for eCycling services for residents, donations are accepted to support local charities and schools to help promote environmental stewardship.

In 2012, over $2,000 was raised from donations at the Pella, Iowa, event to help fund environmental programs at Pella Christian and Pella high schools and Central College.

Why eCycle?

Discarded electronics can contain hazardous materials. If disposed improperly, they pose a potential threat to human health and the environment.

E-waste accounts for 40 percent of the lead and 75 percent of the heavy metals found in landfills, according to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (IDNR’s) website.

Proper disposal of electronic waste can help protect your privacy and lessen the risk of identity theft. Before donating or recycling your electronics, remove personal information from your system or use a reputable organization that provides that service.

Recycling one million laptops saves the energy equivalent to the electricity used by 3,657 U.S. homes in a year, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) website.

Windows play vital role in home safety

PELLA, IOWA — April 1, 2013 — In many parts of the U.S., April marks the start of warmer weather for cooped-up families longing for sunshine. As your windows open to bring in fresh air, Pella Corporation encourages consumers to practice window safety to help prevent accidental falls.

April 7 – 13 is National Window Safety Week in America — a reminder to parents and caregivers about how to help prevent accidental falls or injuries and how to use windows for potential emergency escapes. Pella teams up with the National Safety Council (NSC) through its Window Safety Task Force, to promote year-round window safety tips.

“Keep an eye on children in the home and teach them to keep their play in the center of the room, away from windows and doors for safety’s sake,” said Kathy Krafka Harkema, Pella spokesperson and a NSC Window Safety Task Force member. “Keep windows closed and locked when not in use for ventilation. When you do open double-hung windows to let in fresh air, a safer solution is to pull the top sash down and keep the lower sash closed when there are children in the home,” she said.

About 14 children a day

About 5,200 children in the U.S. are taken to hospitals each year for treatment from a window fall, according to a study by the Center for Injury Research and Policy of the Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. That’s an average of about 14 children per day. Children younger than 5 made up 65 percent of those injured.

“Responsible adult supervision is essential when it comes to maintaining child safety,” Krafka Harkema said. “Never lean on screens, because insect screens are not designed to keep anyone from falling. They simply help keep bugs out; insect screens don’t protect you or your loved ones from accidental falls.”

Window safety tips from Pella:

Keep furniture like beds or dressers away from windows. Furniture placed directly under a window can create an enticement for a child to climb and the potential to fall.

Keep children’s play safely away from windows, doors and balconies to help prevent an accidental fall or injury.

Remember, insect screens are designed to provide ventilation and to keep insects out, NOT to prevent falls. For added safety in children’s bedrooms, consider installing window guards or window fall prevention devices that meet American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards.

Window treatments with traditional cords can contribute to childhood injuries. For added protection, choose blinds and shades with no room-side cords like Pella Designer Series® windows and patio doors, which feature between-the-glass blinds, shades and decorative panels. Pella® 350 Series patio doors also offer between-the-glass window fashions with no roomside cords.

Plant soft shrubs, like boxwood, or yews, under exterior windows that might be used as an emergency escape route to help soften a fall.

While spring cleaning, do a “clutter sweep” and remove tripping hazardsnear exit routes from windows, doors or balconies.

Do not allow children to jump on beds or other furniture, especially near windows.

Talk to older children about the dangers of playing near windows.

Pella Corporation earns ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Year

PELLA, IOWA —March 5, 2013 — Pella Corporation earned an ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year 2013 award, presented by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Energy (DOE) for manufacturing energy-efficient windows and educating consumers about them.

“Pella is a longtime leader in designing and manufacturing energy-efficient vinyl, fiberglass and wood windows that help homeowners lower their energy use and their energy bills,” said Elaine Sagers, vice president of marketing at Pella.

“As an industry leader in energy-efficient innovations, the Pella team is committed to helping consumers understand the importance of choosing ENERGY STAR-qualified products for their homes and businesses,” she said.

The 2013 Partner of the Year awards are given to manufacturers and retailers that successfully promote and produce ENERGY STAR-qualified products, saving consumers money and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, according to EPA. Winners are selected from award applicants among nearly 20,000 organizations that participate in the ENERGY STAR program.

“Through their commitment to producing quality energy-efficient ENERGY STAR products, Pella has demonstrated their commitment to saving consumers money and protecting our environment,” said Bob Perciasepe, acting administrator, EPA. “Pella is recognized today for this outstanding effort that has helped protect the climate for all Americans.”

Energy-saving facts

For a typical home, replacing single-pane windows with ENERGY STAR-qualified windows can save $146 – $501 a year on energy costs, and reduce a home’s carbon footprint by 7-15 percent, according to energystar.gov.

Double-pane insulating glass windows include two panes of glass with a gas-filled space between them — and can insulate over two times better than single-pane windows based on a comparison of U-Factors.

Benefits of double-pane insulating glass low-emissivity (Low-E) windows over single-pane windows with clear glass include: lower energy costs, improved home comfort in hot or cold weather, protection from the sun’s fading rays, and more peace and quiet by reducing outside noise.

Pella® Windows & Doors team walks to raise money for diabetes research

PELLA, IOWA — Feb 4., 2013 — Put on your walking shoes and help raise money for diabetes research on Sat., Feb. 16, by participating in the annual Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) walk. This year’s event starts at the Marriott in downtown Des Moines, and weaves through the skywalk system. Registration begins at 8 a.m., with opening ceremonies at 8:30 a.m.

The Greater Iowa Walk to Cure Diabetes 2013 is often Iowa’s largest single-day fundraiser for a non-profit cause, and among the largest walks per-capita for JDRF across the US, according to JDRF. Pella Corporation President and CEO and Greater Iowa Corporate Walk Chair Pat Meyer is honored to support the event.

“Our Pella Windows and Doors team is proud to have raised more than $2 million for JDRF in 10 years. It’s a highly-efficient non-profit organization that puts the bulk of dollars raised directly to research to help find a cure for type 1 diabetes,” Meyer said.

JDRF’s research mission is to “discover, develop and deliver advances that cure, better, treat and prevent type 1 diabetes.” Type 1 diabetes affects 3 million people every year in the United States, and claims an estimated 80 lives each day.

While there are two major types of diabetes, JDRF primarily supports research for type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune disease in which a pancreas doesn’t produce enough insulin — a hormone that helps break down food into energy. Scientists believe that genetic and environmental factors may be involved in disease onset.

“The great thing about donating to JDRF is that you are impacting so many people’s lives for the better, especially when you take part in events like the JDRF walk,” Meyer said. “Personally, I have several friends and team members who live with this disease every day. That’s why the Pella team is dedicated to helping raise money for research, to help find a cure for diabetes.”

Jim Thomas is one Pella team member whose family is affected by type 1 diabetes.“I am personally committed to JDRF, since my daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes seven years ago,” said Thomas, director of IT operations at Pella.

Currently serving on the Greater Iowa JDRF board, Thomas will lead the board as President for a two-year term, starting in July of 2013. “I encourage people to get involved with JDRF, and appreciate all the support both within the Pella team member family and communities around us,” Thomas said.

Thomas, Meyer and other Pella team members along with an estimated 6,000 others will walk to raise money for JDRF research.

“We encourage Iowans to join us Feb. 16 in a new location at the downtown Des Moines Marriott for this lively event that gives the whole family a chance to get out, get some exercise and take in family-friendly fun while supporting JDRF,” Meyer said.

Threat of home fires persists as widespread U.S. drought continues

PELLA, IOWA — October 5, 2012 — According to the National Climatic Data Center, the drought of 2012 that persists across much of the United States is among the 10 largest of the past century. With hot, dry conditions continuing across much of the country, Pella Windows and Doors encourages Americans to be especially vigilant about home fire safety.

“High heat, combined with little precipitation across much of the U.S., creates favorable conditions for fires,” said Kathy Krafka Harkema, Pella spokesperson and fire safety educator. “Now’s the time to develop a home fire safety escape plan, and practice it with your family to promote fire and window safety preparedness,” she said.

Through its Close the door on fire® campaign, Pella encourages consumers to practice home safety year-round:

Identify! Prepare! Practice!

Evaluate fire safety risks inside your home and immediate surroundings. Equip your garage with smoke detectors since garage fires can start and spread quickly. Also, properly extinguish fire in indoor fireplaces or outdoor fire settings like grills or fire pits to prevent the risk of fire spreading around your home or elsewhere. Check for local burn ban ordinances and follow them.

Identify two exits – Designate two exits from every room in your home — a door and a window. Make sure doors and windows open quickly and easily to help ensure a quick exit; if not, consider replacing them for safety’s sake.

Have a plan – Download a fire escape grid from Pella (http://pressroom.pella.com/photo_library/preview/621/) and draw a floor plan of each level of your home. Before an emergency strikes, establish and communicate a meeting place a safe distance outside your home for your household members to gather in the event of a fire.

Check the alarms – Install working smoke alarms in or near every sleeping area and on every level in your home. Test alarms monthly, change batteries regularly, and replace alarms not permanently wired into your home’s electrical system every 10 years.

Make smart purchases – Consider keeping items like fire extinguishers and if your home contains more than one story, fire escape ladders in your home. Mark their location on your home fire plan and share this information with those in your home.

Test the alarm – Sound smoke alarms when household members are awake so everyone knows what they sound like, and test your family’s ability to awaken to fire alarms during sleeping hours. If they don’t awaken easily, assign someone to awaken sound sleepers in the event of an emergency.

Practice makes perfect – Practice your home fire escape plan with everyone in your home at least twice a year. Practice your plan first in the daytime to familiarize everyone in your home with what to do in the event of a fire, and then at night, when most home fires occur.

Fire safety during drought

Keep grass cut short around your home and property

Remove dried leaves and other unnecessary flammable debris

Remove debris from your home’s gutters

Trim and remove dead plant material like trees and shrubs in your landscaping

Observe burn bans and refrain from starting outdoor fires, including campfires and grills that have exposed embers

Window safety tips from Pella

Keep children’s play away from windows, doors and balconies.

Teach people not to lean against a window screen. Insect screens are designed to keep bugs out, not to keep a person in the building.

Keep windows closed and locked when not in use to let in fresh air. When opening windows for ventilation, open those that a child cannot reach like the upper sash on a double-hung window.

Keep furniture like beds and dressers — anything children can climb — away from windows.

Safety stats

In the U.S., a home fire is reported every 83 seconds, according to the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA). More than 3,500 Americans die each year in fires, USFA reports, and about 20,000 are injured.

“Despite the best intentions to change batteries in smoke alarms or practice home fire drills, many people simply don’t talk to their families about these potentially life-saving practices,” Krafka Harkema said. “Take the time to do it. Pella provides fact sheets with safety tips to help you protect your family year-round.”

Helpful tools, images, audio sound bite

Downloadable fire escape grid

Downloadable fire safety home images

Window safety video

Window safety tips

Pella team members rally to help find a cure for type 1 diabetes

PELLA, IOWA — July 24, 2012 — You need the skills of a mathematician, a physician, a personal trainer and a dietician to successfully treat and live with type 1 diabetes, says Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) celebrity spokesperson Mary Tyler Moore.

“We need to be constantly factoring and adjusting, making frequent finger sticks to check blood sugars, and giving ourselves multiple daily insulin injections just to stay alive,” said Moore on the JDRF website.

Moore is one of three million Americans who has or may have type 1 diabetes, according to JDRF. Each year, more than 150,000 children and 15,000 adults — about 80 people per day — are diagnosed with the disease, according to JDRF.

Pella employees pledge support

Nearly a decade ago, the team members of Pella® Windows and Doors began actively raising money for JDRF to help find a cure for the autoimmune disease.

During the past year, Pella team members across the U.S. and Canada have raised $107,777. Add that to its annual fundraising since 2003, and Pella team members have raised $2,083,411 for the non-profit JDRF to help support type 1 diabetes research.

“Those who live with type 1 diabetes typically take insulin every day just to survive. We know that insulin is not a cure, and that’s why Pella is dedicated to raising money for JDRF to help fund essential research,” said Pella spokeswoman Kathy Krafka Harkema, who donated a kidney to free her mother from dialysis, when her mother’s kidneys failed from type 1 diabetes. “Pella team members proudly raise money for JDRF to make life easier for those with type 1 diabetes and those who care for them,” said Krafka Harkema.

Personal connections

Krafka Harkema is one of many Pella employees with a personal connection to type 1 diabetes. Jim Thomas, director of information technology operations at Pella, has a daughter with type 1 diabetes. Thomas is now president-elect of the Greater Iowa JDRF Chapter Board of Directors.

“Reality sets in very quickly once a loved one is diagnosed with diabetes,” he said. “Life changing is immediate!”

Thomas credits JDRF for its commitment to funding diabetes research. In the more than 40 years the organization has been raising money, type 1 diabetes has become much easier for people to deal with, monitor and control, he said.

“As a parent, you are clearly reminded every day of very real impacts and concerns from this disease. It’s a constant battle wanting to understand and not be overprotective,” he said. “My daughter is 19 years old and does a great job taking responsibility for her health. She understands what it means to her for the long term.”

Moving toward a cure

More than 80 percent of JDRF donations fund research and research-related education advances in every stage of type 1 diabetes, from prevention to treatment to cure, said Mary Hunter, executive director of JDRF Greater Iowa. At the Greater Iowa Chapter, which contributes more than $2.1 million annually to diabetes research, the efficiencies are even higher than 80 percent.

“JDRF funds more type 1 diabetes research than any other charity, but there is more promising science out there than we can currently afford to fund,” Hunter said.

“Through the support we have from corporations like Pella Windows and Doors we can deliver better treatments, and eventually a cure,” she said.

To help JDRF find the cure for diabetes, visit jdrf.com (link to: www.jdrf.com) to make an online donation, learn about volunteer opportunities and find out about upcoming fundraising events.

What is Type 1 diabetes?

Type 1 diabetes — also called juvenile diabetes — occurs when the body’s own immune system misguidedly attacks and destroys certain cells in the pancreas, according to JDRF.. These cells normally produce insulin, a chemical messenger that helps the body move sugar from food sources into cells throughout the body, which use it for fuel to stay alive. But when the cells are destroyed, no insulin can be produced, and sugar stays in the blood instead, where it can cause serious damage to the organ systems of the body and starves cells of their normal energy source.

Impact-resistant products help protect homes, businesses in hurricanes

PELLA, Iowa — June 12, 2012 — Is your home or business in a hurricane-prone zone? Rather than racing out into the storm to plaster your windows with plywood or frantically trying to find shutters, there’s an easier way to help protect your home or business year-round. Pella Windows and Doors with impact-resistant glass, called HurricaneShield, help protect your home and belongings, whether you are home or away.

As a laminated glass with a polymer interlayer that helps stop flying debris from breaking completely through it, HurricaneShield products help keep a building intact, even in fierce winds. In fact, Pella windows and doors with HurricaneShield impact-resistant glass are so strong that they can withstand impact equivalent to that of a 2-by-4 traveling at 50 feet per second. Plus, these durable products meet the stringent Dade County, Florida code.

“Pella HurricaneShield windows and doors with impact-resistant glass help protect your family and valuables in your home in the event of a strong storm. They also help reduce outside noise, for a more peaceful home environment, no matter where you live,” said Product Marketing Specialist Jodi Solomon.

Solomon encourages home and business owners to consult with their insurance agents to review coverage for buildings and their contents.

“If you live in an area prone to hurricanes, ask if your insurance coverage provides discounts if you replace your existing windows and doors with impact-resistant products,” she said. “A reduction in insurance premiums can go a long way towards the cost of window or door replacement and add to your peace of mind by taking action to prepare before a storm strikes,” Solomon said.

Two lines offer optional impact-resistant glass

Pella offers two window and door lines with HurricaneShield impact-resistant glass: Architect Series® wood windows and patio doors and Pella® 350 Series vinyl patio doors.

Wood design options, powerful protection

Pella Architect Series wood windows and doors with impact-resistant HurricaneShield glass offer many other sought-after features including seacoast-worthy, low maintenance EnduraClad® aluminum clad exteriors that help protect the window or door from the elements. Stainless-steel operating hardware — a standard feature on Pella casement windows — resists rust and corrosion even in demanding coastal environments.

Pella’s design eliminates the need for unsightly brace clips and other visible reinforcement, enabling you to enjoy the beauty of the natural wood interiors in the Architect Series collection, Solomon said.

Durable, low-maintenance vinyl patio doors

With a distinctive design, durable frame, high-quality hardware, Pella 350 Series vinyl sliding patio doors feature energy-efficient options that meet or exceed ENERGY STAR® in all 50 states.

Pella Corp engineer leaves lasting legacy for Iowa parks

PELLA, IOWA — June 4, 2012 — Chris Desjardins worked tirelessly as an engineer for Pella Corporation for 23 years. Quiet-natured and passionate about energy efficiency, people described him as an avid outdoorsman, brilliant thinker and all-around-nice guy. His sudden death at age 47 on May 5, 2009, stunned family and coworkers. Today, his legacy lives on through a new renewable energy project funded by Desjardins’ estate, designed to help encourage Iowans to use renewable energy, specifically wind and solar power in their homes.

When Chris died, he left a generous gift from an insurance policy to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) for the creation of a renewable energy project. The Chris Desjardins Memorial Fund fueled the seed money for IDNR’s largest renewable energy project, together with additional funding from the Iowa Economic Development Authority, IJOBS, and the Resource Enhancement and Protection Fund.

Details about the project will be announced at a ceremony Friday, June 8, at Honey Creek State Park Resort near Moravia, Iowa. The public event will take place from 10 a.m. – noon on the resort’s back terrace and will include tours of the activity center, lodge, cottages and grounds.

“His college application essay urged the U.S. to invest more heavily in renewable energy, specifically wind and solar power,” says older brother Pete Desjardins, who lives in Chicago. Chris wrote the essay in 1981, when he was 19 years old. “It wasn’t surprising that he was thinking about renewable energy in his estate plan. I guess you could say that he ‘walked the walk,’” Pete says. “That’s the kind of guy he was.”

Renewables: Live! project

Honoring the family’s wishes, Pete championed the Desjardins Renewable Project taking a vague idea and turning it into a statewide pilot program. Its aim is to give Iowans first-hand experience with the power of renewable energy by creating seven working solar- and wind-powered building projects at several Iowa state parks. The details:

$1.1 million project – funding from IOEI, through federal stimulus, IDNR and the Chris Desjardins Memorial Fund

State parks included in pilot project – Honey Creek Resort in Appanoose County, Lake Darling in Washington County, Pleasant Creek in Linn County, EB Lyons Nature Center in Dubuque County, Big Creek in Polk County, Brushy Creek in Webster County, Lewis & Clark in Monona County and Nine Eagles in Decatur County

Renewable power projects include – solar-powered security lights, solar photovoltaic panels for building/cabin rooftops, small wind turbines and solar thermal roof applications

Goals – to introduce renewable technologies accessible to the average homeowner, while creating a green experience at state parks. Additionally, reduce ongoing power expenses and the parks’ overall carbon footprint.

“Although I never got a chance to meet him, Chris was an inspiration on how one person can make a difference. We want to help tell his story and inspire people to install wind and solar projects in their homes,” said Tammie Krausman, IDNR project manager and a driving force behind making the project a reality.

“We chose sites throughout the state so we can educate as many people as possible, while reducing our energy demand. It’s an exciting way to give people first-hand experience with the power of renewable energy,” she says. “Everyone who worked on this project was inspired by Chris Desjardins.”

Legendary work ethic

Chris worked for Pella in Iowa during his career. At the time of his death, Chris was living in Tennessee, working as an engineering manager for Pella Corporation’s Murray, Ky., manufacturing operations.

“Chris was a prize jewel that you wanted to have on your team,” says Jim Meyer, vice president of operations at Pella and longtime colleague. “Chris lived Pella® Windows and Doors. He was his own guy. He did it his own way. He wasn’t afraid to have confidence in who he was.”

Chris worked for Pella Corporation for his entire career. Though Chris lived a “uniquely private” life, Meyer says he was a valued part of the “family” at Pella Corporation and was regarded as a high-energy, intelligent, humble leader with an unmatched work ethic.

Grease-powered VW

Pete says his brother showed a lifelong passion for alternative energy. For instance, Chris owned two wind turbines to help power his Tennessee home. He also drove “the greasemobile” — a 1989 Volkswagen® Jetta® he converted to run on recycled grease that he filtered in his garage. The greasemobile boasted an astounding 375 miles per gallon of diesel fuel (the remaining energy being provided by recycled popcorn oil). “He drove that car to work every day,” Pete remembers. “It stuck out like a sore thumb.”

Chris was very athletic — running 17 marathons during his life, including one week when he ran two. He also loved to hunt. He went on an African safari by himself, was dropped from a helicopter into remote Alaska to hunt bear with a bow and arrow, and had Iowa deer trophies hanging in his home.

“We got cheated when Chris died,” Meyer says of Desjardin’s unexpected passing. “We needed to have Chris around longer. He was so impactful for our company. You just don’t replace someone like him.”

Ongoing legacy

A portion of the Chris Desjardins Memorial Fund is being set aside as seed money to attract future renewable energy grants, Pete says. Others who wish to adopt this noble pursuit or contribute further can contact The Iowa Department of Natural Resources or Pete Desjardins at pete@yoexllc.com.

“We want to make sure that Chris is remembered,” Pete says. “We want his legacy to stand for renewable energy and educating people about how to make their own homes and lifestyles more sustainable and energy-efficient. I know that’s what he’d want.”

Additional information:

EFCO® creates high performance, unitized curtain wall

MONETT, Mo. — May 14, 2012 — There’s a new curtain wall in town and it packs a powerful punch for thermal performance, structural integrity and design flexibility. EFCO representatives will showcase the new 8750XD unitized curtain wall, part of the XTherm family of products, in Pella and EFCO booth #2327 during the 2012 American Institute of Architects (AIA) National Convention and Design Expo, May 17-19, 2012, in Washington, D.C.

“We invite AIA expo visitors to check out the new XTherm 8750XD product from EFCO that delivers the structural elements needed for mid-to high-rise projects,” said Erik Sutton, manager of product marketing, EFCO. “Plus, this unitized curtain wall features superior thermal performance and design flexibility.”

Strength in numbers

The new aluminum curtain wall leverages Duracast® fiberglass composite technology in a patent-pending thermal break design. The new EFCO curtain wall is shop fabricated and assembled, which helps reduce field labor costs. With an industry-leading U-factor of 0.31 — a 35 percent improvement compared to conventional unitized walls — the 8750XD offers popular system profiles, multiple configuration options and integral vents for optimal design flexibility.

“With its superior thermal performance and structural integrity, thanks to its unique design that has a key element — Duracast fiberglass composite technology — glazing contractors, general contractors and architects will find the 8750XD an outstanding building envelope solution,” Sutton said.

EFCO XTherm line provides multiple options

Curtain walls

The EFCO 5600 curtain wall features an optional Duracast pressure plate that is 300 times better than aluminum for thermal conductance and provides a 27 percent gain in frame and glass U-factor. Because it features Duracast fiberglass composite technology in the pressure plate, the curtain wall’s thermal performance improves and it’s stronger than conventional fiberglass. Plus, the need for a gasket-type thermal isolator between the back member and pressure plate is eliminated ─ reducing installation steps to help save time and money.

EFCO’s 5500X curtain wall system offers an array of design and energy-saving options. This 2 1/2 \" wide curtain wall system is capable of achieving U-factors as low as .19 for outstanding thermal performance. The curtain wall system offers a variety of accessories like snap-on face covers plus multiple color and finish options to meet a wide range of configurations and designs.

EFCO also offers interior light shelves — ideal for channeling natural daylight into interior space, reducing the need for artificial lighting and conserving energy. E-Lite™ and EZ-Lite fixed and operable interior light shelves are available in popular depths to meet design and energy-saving needs. EFCO E-Shade™ sunshades are an economical option to reduce solar heat gain and glare while allowing all-important natural daylight into a building. E-Shade is available in five standard lengths and designed to integrate with EFCO curtain wall systems.

Windows

Designed to meet energy-efficiency needs in commercial projects, XTherm 450X and 450G window series feature a deeper strutted thermal break for triple glazing while providing superior thermal separation of framing materials. For use in a variety of projects including educational to office to healthcare buildings, the windows offer exceptional U-value performance, dual glazing and optional integral blinds.

The XTherm HX45 double-hung window has a variety of outstanding energy-efficient commercial applications including schools, government buildings and green construction. The energy efficient design provides a substantial improvement in the interior frame temperatures. Both block and tackle and class 5 balances are available along with the quality auto locking and sweep lock hardware that has been a part of other EFCO products for many years.

Headquartered in Monett, Mo., privately-held professionally-managed EFCO provides innovative customer solutions to satisfy commercial design challenges from historical replication to cutting-edge new construction. EFCO manufactures architectural windows, curtain wall, storefront, and entry systems designed for commercial construction needs sold through independent sales representatives across the United States.

Pella® showcases commercial, residential solutions at AIA expo

PELLA, Iowa — May 14, 2012 — At the American Institute of Architects (AIA) National Convention and Design Expo, May 17-19, 2012, in Washington, D.C. in booth #2327, Pella Windows and Doors representatives will explain new products, and those redesigned for greater performance in commercial projects.

“AIA provides architects with the opportunity to connect, discuss their specific questions and learn,” said Pella architect Terry Zeimetz, AIA, CSI, CCPR. “As industry leaders known for innovation, the Pella brand offers practical, energy-efficient solutions to meet a wide range of project needs and designs.”

Pella innovations offer outstanding energy performance

During the expo, Pella features its most energy-efficient product, Pella 350 Series vinyl windows and patio doors. Up to 83% more energy-efficient1 and featuring a premium look inside and out, Pella 350 Series products are durable, high- performing options. The windows and doors include 18 insulating chambers — three times more than typical vinyl — and total unit U-factors as low as 0.17. According to the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC), the lower the U-factor, the greater a window’s resistance to heat and the better its insulating qualities. (See attached Pella 350 Series fact sheet for more detail.)

New aluminum trims help save time, add detail

Pella will also feature new low-maintenance, factory-applied aluminum exterior trims, available in custom and standard profiles that complement Pella aluminum-clad wood windows and patio doors. The new trim options feature an innovative water management design that weeps water back to the building’s exterior to help improve drainage. Available in a variety of finish options, the trims help accent and protect commercial and residential buildings for new construction and renovation projects. (See attached aluminum trim fact sheet for more detail.)

Custom product solutions

Pella offers custom product solutions to meet unique design needs from historic renovations to cutting-edge contemporary projects. From custom sizes, shapes and grille patterns to colors and more, Pella works with architects to customize products that match their project vision while meeting product performance expectations. For example — Pella commercial experts developed custom windows and doors for the reuse of three historical retail and commercial buildings in Washington, D.C. into a new mixed use building.

New EFCO curtain wall helps lower builder fabrication costs

At the AIA trade expo, EFCO, a Pella Company, introduces its new 8750XD unitized curtain wall, the latest addition to the XTherm® family of products.

Green Schoolhouse Series creates sustainable schools

PELLA, Iowa — May 8, 2012 — Pella Windows and Doors will be included in new LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Platinum schoolhouses built in Arizona in 2012, as a partner in the Green Schoolhouse Series.

Three distinctive designs will replace portable classrooms or community centers in Phoenix area school districts. Construction of a 6,291 square-foot classroom and community-center building for Roadrunner Elementary School is now underway in west Phoenix. Two more Phoenix area schoolhouses are slated to break ground in 2012.

“The Green Schoolhouse project’s goal is to help create a better learning environment for children,” said Pella Corporation Vice President of Marketing Elaine Sagers. “As a longtime leader in sustainability and educational causes, it was a natural for us to donate Pella windows and EFCO storefront and entrance systems to help students in these communities.”

Reading, writing and air

More than 20 percent of public schools reported having unsatisfactory indoor air quality, according to the U.S. Department of Education. And it’s estimated that students in America miss approximately 14 million school days per year because of asthma, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

According to the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, controlling exposure to indoor environmental factors, like carbon monoxide, dust, and pollen, could help prevent more than 65 percent of asthma cases among elementary school-age children.

Keeping it cool

ENERGY STAR® qualified Pella Impervia® fiberglass windows, donated by Pella will be featured in Green Schoolhouse Project schools.

Made from Pella’s patented five-layer engineered Duracast® fiberglass composite, these energy-efficient windows can withstand the forces of Mother Nature without cracking, shrinking or warping in extreme weather conditions like the heat of Arizona. The strength and durability of Pella Impervia windows, together with their sleek profiles, make them a natural choice for schools and homes.

The school’s entrances feature EFCO aluminum storefront and door systems. The high-performance EFCO doors designed for use in schools are surrounded by expansive floor-to-ceiling storefront glazing to provide dramatic views. Welded EFCO entrance systems provide solid construction and low-maintenance longevity.

About EFCO

Privately-held professionally managed EFCO, a Pella Company headquartered in Monett, Mo. provides innovative customer solutions to satisfy commercial design challenges from historical replication to cutting-edge new construction.
About Green Schoolhouse

The Green Schoolhouse Series is a catalyst for change; a public/private collaboration that focuses on meeting critical needs of children, education, and the environment. Spearheaded by a strategic partnership between Brighten A Life, a nonprofit organization, and CAUSE AND EFFECT Evolutions, a cause development firm, The Green Schoolhouse Series brings together corporations, foundations, school districts, municipalities, communities, media outlets, and volunteers to build 21st-century, environmentally-sustainable schoolhouses on existing Title I, low-income, K-12 public school campuses.
Avoid damage with new protection for Pella® wood windows, patio doors

PELLA, IOWA — May 1, 2012 — New protective glass film from Pella Windows and Doors is an extra safeguard to help ensure that its wood windows and patio doors will arrive at the jobsite in the same condition as when they left the factory, and stay protected throughout the construction process.

Factory-applied protective film will now be standard on interior and exterior glass surfaces of Pella wood window and patio door lines, including Pella ProLine, Architect Series®, Designer Series® and custom wood products.*

“Pella pays attention to every little detail to make the installation process easier and less stressful for our customers,” said Duane Putz of Pella’s product marketing team. “This extra step at the factory helps protect the glass in our wood windows and patio doors to minimize surprises during installation and throughout the construction process.”

How you benefit

The factory-applied protective film helps protect glass from scratches and debris — from the moment your order is shipped, through its delivery and storage at your home or jobsite. In addition to avoiding costly damage and delays, the glass film offers the following benefits:

Added protection, durability – Whether you install the windows and patio doors the day they arrive from the factory, or if you need to temporarily store them, the glass film provides a barrier against dust, mud, mortar, paint and other jobsite debris throughout the entire construction process.

Easy to remove, leaves no residue – The protective film can be easily removed from the glass by hand, with no extra chemicals needed. And it won’t leave a sticky residue behind, which means less time spent cleaning the glass.

For more information about Pella Windows and Doors, visit www.Pella.com.

*Products with spandrel glass, entry doors and custom solutions products with small or complex applied grille patterns or glass designs will not have Pella’s protective glass film. Pella’s protective film is not intended for masking purposes when painting or staining the frames. There will be a œ” to 1” gap between the film and the frame of the window or patio door.

PELLA, Iowa — April 19, 2012 — Smart phone-powered window shades, electric vehicle charging stations, smog-eating roof tiles — the home of the future is here. Vacationers can experience fun and state-of-the-art sustainable home technology at the new VISION House® exhibit in INNOVENTIONS at Epcot® at the Walt Disney World® Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

The VISION House® in INNOVENTIONS presented by Green Builder® Media includes an innovative new product from Pella Windows and Doors. Pella SmartSync™ technology will operate energy-efficient Pella Designer Series® windows to create the ability to remotely raise and lower window shades or blinds to help conserve energy using a smart phone or home automation system. The exhibit showcases how Pella SmartSync technology can be powered through an intelligent home automation system.

“As an industry leader dedicated to innovation and energy savings, Pella is excited to be part of this new exhibit that creates a fun, engaging experience to teach people how to make sustainable, energy-efficient choices in their own homes,” said Polly Tousey, Pella strategic programs manager.

Opening Earth Day

Opening April 22 in honor of Earth Day, the VISION House® in INNOVENTIONS at Epcot® — an experiential exhibit created by Walt Disney Imagineering in collaboration with Green Builder Media — highlights major themes of green building, including whole-home automation; energy generation and efficiency; water conservation, indoor environment quality; plus high-performance materials and durability.

Throughout the exhibit, children and adults are encouraged to consider how they can reduce their personal impact on the planet, and changes they can implement in their own homes to help make them more sustainable, healthier, and more durable, Tousey said.

Why Pella Designer Series windows?

From their energy-efficient design to stylish options, Pella Designer Series windows and patio doors are a smart choice for homes and businesses. Benefits include:

Home automation – Designer Series windows with the new Pella SmartSync technology can control optional snap-in shades or blinds with a smart home automation system. Pella SmartSync technology — available for the emerging smart home market later in 2012 — is designed to quickly and conveniently adjust blinds or shades like those in Pella windows to control light, privacy and help save energy in a home or business.

Energy-efficient – With their wood construction and superior insulating qualities, Pella Designer Series windows with triple-pane glass are up to 74 percent more energy-efficient.1

Improved indoor air quality – Optional between-the-glass blinds or shades help prevent and reduce certain indoor airborne allergens from accumulating on the surface area of blinds or shades. Windows with ordinary roomside blinds accumulate 200 times more of certain airborne allergens than Designer Series products with between-the-glass blinds.2

Safer design – Between-the-glass blinds and shades are a popular choice for multi-generational homes because blinds and shades are protected from dust and damage, requiring less maintenance and cleaning. They’re also safer for homes with children and pets, with no potentially hazardous roomside cords.

Good for the environment – The water-based Pella factory finish for Designer Series windows means fewer chemicals are used in the process, contrasted with solvent-based finishes that may be applied on the job site.

VISION House® in INNOVENTIONS

Inspired by Green Builder Media’s VISION House demonstration home series, the INNOVENTIONS exhibit teaches visitors that each house is a set of interactive systems and proper management of those systems can help maximize comfort and minimize operational costs.

It’s a green world

In addition to Pella Designer Series wood windows with SmartSync technology, the home will include these advanced products and technologies:

High efficiency heating and cooling systems and controls and innovative whole-home automation system and door hardware by Ingersoll Rand
